There are lots of options when it comes to harness lines… And a lot of it is personal preference. The first thing to consider is length. If you have no idea what length you want, then purchase adjustable lines so that you can play with it and find the perfect length. If you do know what length you like, then nothing beats the simplicity of a fixed length line. Speaking of simplicity, Dakine’s Mono-Lines and Chinook’s Quicklines (both have a single attachment point) are as precise and easy as it gets. Bear in mind that the Chinook fixed line lengths are approximately one inch longer than the same Dakine fixed line length (Ch 28″ > DK 28″), and the same goes for the mono lines vs standard two point attachments (Ch Qk 28″ > Ch Fixed 28″). It’s weird, but it’s true.
Speaking of harness line length, most people I see on the water are using lines that are much too short. With short lines, you lose the ability to adjust the sail while under way, and you’re much less efficient. There aren’t really any formulas to tell you what lines you should be on, but as a reference, here’s what our shop riders are using:
Andy: 5’9″ and using boom at chin height: 30″ Chinook Quick-Lines.
Ken: 6’0″ and using boom at chin height: 30″ Chinook Fixed Lines.
Anne: 5’5″ and using boom at neck height: 24″ Dakine Mono-Lines.
Here’s a video I made a few year’s back to help you visualize how line length affects stance and rig positioning:
