Cove Video, Photos, and More!

Howdy Folks – Sorry for the lack of posting recently. Rest assured, Hatteras has been absolutely firing with tons of warm south wind! Signs of life are springing up all over the place – I’ve been seeing maintenance crews and homeowners getting rental cottages opened up for the Spring season, trucks full of new goodies have been showing up daily, and we even had some Spring Breakers sailing their butts off last week! The weather has been unseasonably warm, too, so the water has been heating up nicely. Check out the latest sea surface temperature map from Rutgers.edu:

Oh yeah, you’re seeing that correctly – that is 60 degree sound water, in the third week of March! Booyah!

OK, so the best way for me to get you guys caught up is to describe my internal monologue when I was rigging my 5.3 last week: “uggh, this thing rigs on a 400cm mast??” How’s that for being spoiled?!?! My 4.7, 4.2 and 3.6 have been getting a massive workout lately… Wow! I shot some video down in The Cove about a week ago on a 4.2 day. Here’s Stuart, tearing it up on a 4.2 Manic and Tabou Pocket 80:

Stu Windsurfing The Cove from Andy McKinney on Vimeo.

Sweet, eh? That’s one of my favorite places to sail, ever, anywhere. I love windsurfing in The Cove. I had scored another sesh there about 3 days prior, in waves about twice as big and wind much lighter- enough to be 50/50 planing on a 4.7. It was foggy and raining, and visibility was down to less than 100 yards at times. So I’m going to be honest, it was a bit creepy tip toeing around out there- not being able to see the beach, with the buoy running 15 feet, and random wide swinging sets jacking up and breaking in the middle of nowhere… Yeah, definitely sketchy, accentuated by the fact that I had no idea where I was in reference to the beach and the lineup.

Everything was gray/brown – the sky, the water, the lack of horizon – except for these brightly glowing fluorescent blue Portuguese Man O’ War jellyfish bobbing around out there. They were the only color alive on this otherwise drab pallet of a world. The waves were incredible, though. It was absolutely worth bobbing around in the middle of who knows where surrounded by deadly jellyfish and probably a thousand hungry sharks, because if you caught the right wave, man it just pealed and pealed, perfect left-handers, slowly making their way down the point for endless bottom and top turns… Seriously, you couldn’t keep count of how many turns you made on one wave. Unreal.

And this is where it gets totally surreal. I’m bobbing around, lost in a foggy gray seascape, barely moving, dodging massive walls of water jacking up out in the middle of nowhere, and I see something jutting out of the water just ahead. “What the heck?” As I get a touch closer, I break through the curtain of fog and rain and I realize what I’m seeing – there’s clearly a massive whale’s tail pointing straight up to the sky!! And as soon as I recognize the outline, kersploosh! The tail comes smashing down to the water, sending a thousand gallons of seawater crashing outward in a violent rage.

“Is this real?” I think to myself. Well, the answer is yes. My buddy Dan confirmed seeing the whale as well, after the sesh. Both of us were pretty speechless, after catching such amazing waves, and such an incredible encounter with a very rare sight for Hatteras standards! So yeah, The Cove is pretty much my favorite place ever, and that’s just one more reason why!

Here are a few random pictures from the last few weeks:

The fin world is blowing up this year- You guys have never had so many awesome options! I just received a bunch of KaKu Fins from the designer Pierre up in Montreal. They’re available in 12, 15, and 18cm. They’re all fast, great upwind, and fantastic bump and jump high wind weed fins. The 12s are sick for freestyle twin fins- spinnin’ and grinnin’. The 15 works very well on single fin freestyle boards, and the 18 is a fantastic bump and jump fin for 100 liter and smaller FSW, Wave, and Freestyle boards. Come check ‘em out and demo them at Wind-NC this Spring!

12 cm of weed shedding love

While I’m on the subject of fins- the Makani Fins Wyatt Miller/Tyson Poor Windsurfing Clinics are going to go off huge this Spring! The clinic spots are filling up quickly, so if you think you can make it, get in touch with us and get your name on the list ASAP. You can also catch them for free at a couple of evening in-shop-clinics, and they’ll be down at Frisco Woods Windfest, too!! Busy guys!

Crazy Train!

The last 5… 6? days have been just outrageous here on Hatteras Island. For a winter that started off sooo badly (freezing cold, not much wind, not much surf), things have really turned around in a great way!! In the last two weeks we’ve seen quite a few days over the 60 degree mark, and plenty of days over the 20 knot, if not 30 knot mark. In fact, I’m so exhausted, I don’t think I can take it anymore. I NEED some rest days. I thought today was going to be a day off from sailing, but no such luck. With about 20 knots of NNE and some decent swell in the water, the Lighthouse was calling my name…

I rolled into the lot with this song playing on the radio:

…and it couldn’t have been more appropriate! To be honest, the conditions didn’t look that crazy from the beach, and 90% of the session wasn’t that nutz, but there were a few moments where having that song in my head made all the difference in the world. It was a half and half schlog/planing session on the 4.7 IQ and 85 Tabou Quad. I had enough power in the sail to feel like I could get where I wanted to be pretty much most of the time, but I was definitely playing it careful in the impact zone. Most of the waves were about chest or head high, not so big, but sucking out and barreling in typical lighthouse fashion. And there were 2 sets that came out of nowhere, that were way way Waaaay overhead…. And that’s where having Ozzy Osbourne stuck in your head makes all the difference in the world!

I saw that first set coming from a mile away, and was perfectly positioned to catch it way outside. I had the second wave of a three wave set, and it lined up perfectly for three or four down the line turns and then a bit of pumping and racing to pop out over the shoulder and schlog back out without getting caught inside. Stoked, and my heart rate was finally up a bit! “Where the heck did THAT come from??” I thought. “I want ANOTHER!!”

The wind was fading, and it was now a pure schlog fest. I tiptoed around the lineup, dropping in to a few little waves, making some turns, but I always had my eyes on the horizon, waiting for another one of those sets. Finally, a medium sized one came through so I took it and made a few turns down the line. Upon kicking out, I look up and see a macker of a wall marching towards me… “Yikes! Where’d that come from?!” I’m way inside now, with this thing looming up… A little gust rolls through, just enough to get three or four solid pumps out of the sail as I look up at the feathering lip above me. Up up up I go… and just barely make it over! Phew!!

I managed to keep my balance as I rolled down the backside of that wave, and look up to see another one just 20 yards out. With a good bit of pull in the sail, I take a few pumps and I’m pretty sure that I’m not going to get creamed by this thing. Dilemma time. Keep pumping out to safety, or… Turn And Burn?! Of course, Ozzy Osbourne kicks in, FULL VOLUME, at the crucial moment. This set is NOT going to waste. Yes yes, pivot jibe, drop in clew first, scramble for the straps as I’m flipping the sail and careening down the face of this monster!! “I’m going off the rails on a Crazy Train!!!!!”

Oh man, what a wave!! 50 yards later I kick out, with adrenaline pumping, and music screaming in my ears.

Thank You Ozzy!!!

Phew.

Ok, so there was no-one on the beach, no photogs, no GoPro video, no nothing from that Lighthouse sesh. But I Did snap off a few photos from the last few days prior. Here they are, in chronological order:

Sweet, Sweet Valentine’s Day!

I know you guys probably already hate me a little bit, so I’m just going to go ahead and add some fuel to the fire. Not only was Valentine’s Day unseasonably warm, but it was also incredibly windy. For many windsurfers, that would be a recipe for disaster: Being late for a dinner date, while stinking of wetsuit, well, that’s a tough sell on any night, let alone a romantic holiday. For me, though? Well, my valentine was just as happy missing dinner as I was!

The air was warm, the wind was howling, and I had spent an extra 5 minutes making sure Anne’s 3.3 was rigged to perfection. Her wetsuit was ready, and her rig was by the water’s edge. Yes, the scene was set for a romantic sunset sail! She pulled into the parking lot, donned her dinner wear, and hit the water with shouts of glee! My 3.6 was ready two minutes later, and we shredded til the sun disappeared, me on 85 liters, she on 67. The date couldn’t have gone better!!

Be still, my beating heart! My Valentine sets off on a 3.3 and 67 liters of love!

Trust me, I know- I’m a VERY lucky man.

Earlier that day, Dale B and I had sailed at Ramp 34 in nuking winds and chest to head high waves. Tons of current, and massive holes in the gusty wind made for fairly challenging conditions, but it was still REALLY fun. I set up a tailgate cam, but only caught a few mini clips before the silly 12 minute auto-shutoff feature did it’s trick. Does anyone out there in web world know if I can override that on the Canon Rebel t2i?

Tuesday, the day after Valentine’s Day, dawned clear and cold, with a solid northerly wind rustling the tree tops. I decided to head back to the same spot at Ramp 34 and try my luck in the mirror image of the conditions from the day before. It was, yet again, a REALLY fun session! I’m goofy foot, so I really enjoy going left in port tack conditions. And the more time I spend on that Tabou DaCurve 85, the more I like it! I set up yet another Tailgate Cam and ended up catching some halfway decent action, but missed the one huge backloop attempt that I threw… So I guess I’ll never know how big (or small) it really was… Oh well! Anyway, check out this short compilation video from the last 2 days:

Valentine’s Day Windsurfing at Ramp 34 from Andy McKinney on Vimeo.

Oh, and here’s one last thing for you to check out- This is a video of a feeding frenzy we saw over the weekend. The birds are Gannets (Thanks, Jerry!!), and who knows what’s under the surface?! Bump up the resolution for the best view:

A few minutes later, Anne noticed a whale lumbering on by…

We don’t see that everyday, here on Hatteras, at least! Stoked!

Looks warm and windy towards the end of the week… Spring is right around the corner!! Hope to see y’all soon!

Mid-Winter Report

Wow, the weather in Hatteras has been all over the place this winter. We’ve seen snow, we’ve seen sunshine, and of course, lots of wind and waves. It’s been too long since my last post, so rather than just laying on story after story to get you all caught up, I’m just going to put up a few pictures and videos of the latest happenings. I’d put up pictures of some other folks, but no one else is here. So I’m all you get!

First up, Anne caught a flaka on film! Thanks sweetie! Check it:

She also took this great Sunset Grubby picture at the Buxton Slick:

(As with any photo you see on Lost In Hatteras, email me if you want a larger version for a new desktop background)

We’ve had some glassy surf, too. Chad heads out with his longboard below:

Then we had a blizzard at the Beach!!!

I went windsurfing at the Lighthouse as the storm was first getting started. If you’re wondering, snow stings the eyes just as badly, if not worse, than rain does. Painful! An hour after I was sailing, this is what the beach looked like (bump up the quality for the best view)

At long last, The Windsurfing Ice Cream Cone at the Avon DQ can enjoy a wave without melting in the hot summer sun:

The next day was bluebird and beautiful!

Banana was going BANANAS on the beach!!!

Anne and I, before catching a few of those glassy waves you see in the background:

All of that snow melted just a day or two later, and it was back to normal — or even better! I caught a solo sesh at Ramp 34 the other day. It was absolutely AMAZINGLY fun! Sunshine, 65-degree air, enough wind to sail the 4.2 Gaastra IQ on my new 85 liter Tabou Quad, and up to logo-high set waves. Life Is Good! It was just missing some warmer water (it’s 39 or 40 degrees F at the moment), slightly less violent wind (I dared not throw any jumps at all), and a few friends on the water (although it turns out there were a few kiters out about five miles north). Anyway, I set up a “Tailgate Cam” and hoped for the best. Low and behold, my camera turns itself off after just 12.5 minutes of recording. So I didn’t catch much on film, but you can at least get an idea of the conditions by watching this short clip:

Ramp 34 Tailgate Cam 2-2-11 from Andy McKinney on Vimeo.

And that just about gets you caught up. Come on out to the beach and join me!! Sailing alone is better than not sailing at all, but it sure would be fun to get some company out there! Hope to see you soon…

PS: The WINDSURFING Magazine Cape Hatteras Board Tests are right around the corner. I’m super excited!! Sign yourself up if you want to join in the fun!

2011 Tabou DaCurve 85 TE Quad

Hope y’all had some great time with family and friends over the Holidays- Anne and I were all over the east coast and even got caught in that blizzard on the 26th. Good ol’ fashioned white knuckle driving! It was worth it, though, to catch up with all of the fam and friends. That said, I’m stoked to be back in Hatteras- there’s nothing quite like driving over that bridge and breathing a sigh of relief, not only because you made it, but because of where you made it to! This island holds a certain, relaxing charm, that’s for sure.

Anyway, enough waxing poetic. Let’s get down to business. Just before I took off for the Holidays, I received a new board in the mail. It was the Team Edition 2011 Tabou DaCurve 85. The DaCurve is Tabou’s pure hardcore wave board, and comes in two separate models- the Original is a slightly longer single fin version, and the Team Edition is a bit shorter and can be run with 2 fins or 4 fins. Running a 4 fin setup will do a few things to a board:

1) small fin depth, near the rails, gives very little torqueing moment. ie, it takes very little effort to roll the board onto it’s rail or back and forth between the two rails. This characteristic corresponds to twin fins, as well. Compared to the effort of turning a single fin, I think the difference is very noticeable.

2) lots of short, wide fins = a ton of chord length = great planing, drive, and acceleration. They’re also very happy, grippy, and drivey when barely powered/planing. That seems to translate into very good upwind performance, even underpowered, and great maneuverability and ability to accelerate from low speeds to high speeds if you do catch a gust or drop into a wave.

3) having smaller fins near the rails allow the board a ton of control when overpowered- without all that torque from a bigger single fin, the board can happily ride flat and controlled no matter how juiced up you are.

Those are some pretty neat characteristics! Well, I finally got a chance to take the DaCurve out this morning at The Lighthouse- side shore, light power 5.3, lots of current, with waves in the waist to shoulder high range. It was a great test session, because I encountered everything- overpowered/underpowered both on the way out and while on the wave, small gutless waves/top to bottom barreling waves, backside rides/frontside rides, and with the wind shifts and wave wrap I even encountered side on and side off wave riding conditions. Holy smokes, no wonder I’m tired! Here are some thoughts on the performance of the Tabou DaCurve-

“Slot Box” Detail- The Tabou is designed to be sailed with the smaller fins in front of the bigger fins, therefore it is referred to as a “Twinser” even though it has four fins.

Fittings- Four fins and fin boxes can add some weight to a board, but Tabou helped to develop the “Slot Box” which drastically reduces the weight. The fins feel very secure, and the Slot Box allows the user to slide the fins forward and backward to fine tune the ride. Also of note are the footstrap positions- Spacing between front and back is a bit wider than on traditional boards, but the stance feels very natural while up and running. They also offer two angles for the front strap- one normal, and one seemingly parallel with the back strap! I must admit, the inside position feels really good on a wave face, as you can get your foot way over the centerline of the board. Aside from that, the Carbon/Kevlar deck is strong, stiff, and visually stunning in concert with the graphics.

Planing- Once it’s moving, it doesn’t stop- even if the wind does! The board seems to just keep motoring along and creating it’s own lift and drive through lulls like nothing ever happened. I think the tight spacing between the fins might create a bit of a squeeze, which when combined with all the concave helps to keep things moving.

Upwind Ability- Incredible, even when barely powered. No matter how high you point and how hard you push on the fins, it won’t fully spin out. If one fin starts to cavitate, a simple twitch of the back toes will re-engage it.

Jumping- It has enough drive and speed to jump very well. Having a touch more weight directly underfoot seems to add better control in the air. Beware the short length if you do have a bad landing- you’ll want to keep a lot of weight near your back foot to avoid bogging and getting pitched over the front.

In her natural habitat- ohh la la!

Wave Performance- Ooooooooooh Baby, this is where the Tabou really shines!! Putting this board on it’s rail is exceptionally easy and has a nice progressive feel- as in, the harder you push it, the better it responds. I have a feeling that it’s darn near impossible to trip the board up with too tight or too aggressive of a turn; I sure haven’t found that limit. But where it really shines is transitioning from one rail to the other- In the top turn, rolling onto the heel of your back foot feels seamless, and you can bury as much power into that tail as you can possibly muster, without fear of breaking loose or bouncing out or getting tripped up. The real kicker is that after that top turn, as the board rips around 180 degrees in less than a second, it just rolls back around underneath you to redirect you down the line again, like nothing ever happened. Seamless.

In summary, the DaCurve 85 TE is the most natural feeling and radical wave board I’ve ever sailed.

**Disclaimer- I just reread this post before putting it up, and it sounds a bit “sales pitchy.” Please know that it’s all just my opinion, and all from the heart. You’re welcome to demo my board if you want to feel the radness for yourself!**

Officially Winter

A solid northwest breeze is rattling my windows- loudly enough to pull me out of a very nice dream of summer SW winds. A quick check of the meters shows gusts to 30mph and temperatures of 38F. I guess it’s officially winter! It’s time to pull the thick booties out of hiding… and maybe have a quick reminder of some of the cold weather windsurfing tips I’ve posted in the past.

Looking around the island, it definitely feels like winter. The highway is completely empty, and most of the shops and restaurants are locked up. Things are quiet. I kinda like it, as I’m finally able to get a day or two off to catch up on backlogged projects. I took about 3 months worth of recycling to the transfer station yesterday. That was fun! More importantly, though- I now have some time to go sailing! It’s time to get back on track, back down to fighting weight, and back to peak confidence so that I can bust some personal boundaries.

It seems like eons ago, but just the other day, Jim K, Dave C, Keith and Martine M and I grabbed a fun, warm session at the Canadian Hole. I was on a Gaastra IQ 4.2 and 100 liter Twister, loving life! Here are a few pictures:

Dave C, Warp Speed!!

Jim K, letting it fly

Keith M, up and at ‘em

Looks like tons of wind in store for the next few days… but very cold temperatures. I’ll probably be hanging out at The Buxton Slick if anyone cares to join!
